PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication recommended for people who are HIV-negative and at high risk of contracting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) through sexual activity or injection drug use. When taken as prescribed, PrEP can lower the risk of getting HIV through sex by about 99%, and through injection drug use by at least 74%.
PrEP may be a good option if you are HIV-negative and have a sexual partner who is HIV-positive. It is also recommended if you are involved in sexual activities that may put you at higher risk for HIV, such as inconsistent condom use with partners whose HIV status is unknown.
PrEP might be a good choice if you have used PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) multiple times after potential HIV exposure, or if you share needles or other drug injection equipment.
Before starting PrEP, you will need to undergo HIV testing and other screenings. Once on PrEP, you will visit your healthcare provider every three months for follow-up testing and prescription refills. Some appointments may be available via telehealth—just ask your provider.
Truvada is a daily pill prescribed for individuals at high risk of HIV. Descovy is also a daily pill prescribed for most people at high risk of HIV, except those assigned female at birth who are at risk through vaginal sex.
PrEP is taken before exposure to HIV to prevent infection, while PEP is a treatment for those who may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours and need immediate medication to reduce the risk of infection.
Most health insurance plans, cover PrEP prescriptions, although there may be a copay. Some programs offer PrEP for free or at a reduced cost and may also cover prescription copays.

Inland Behavioral and Health Services bills patients’ insurance plans, in-network private insurance, for medical and behavioral health services.
When charges are submitted, you will receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statement from your insurance provider. This document will include basic details about your visit, along with a diagnostic code necessary for processing claims. If you are on a parent or guardian’s insurance plan, they will receive the EOB and may see this information.
If privacy is a concern, we recommend contacting your insurance company to explore the option of receiving your EOBs independently before your health plan processes your claim.
